Kyrgyzstan ranked 125th in the World Press Freedom Rating by the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) media rights watchdog, losing 13 positions since 2008.
Artur Nigmetov, editor of the Azattyk Radion website (Kazakhstan) said at the round table Human rights Internet-initiatives and online-journalism in Central Asia that Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan remained the most repressive states of the region ranking 173rd and 160th respectively. Death of Turkmenbashi did not add freedom to local journalism. On the contrary it brought even more censorship, despotism and violence against journalists.
Uzbekistan shuts down oppositional websites. Kazakhstan has pulled the rope introducing a new Internet bill, despite protests and harsh criticism.
“In Kyrgyzstan Internet is more or less promiscuous and open. Although, there were intentions to set all Internet editions equal to media,” Nigmetov said.
